Barbell back squat

A foundational leg exercise: the bar rests on your upper traps while you bend at the knees and hips and stand back up to full extension. The quadriceps and glutes do most of the work, while the hamstrings and core keep the torso stable. Choose a depth at which your back stays neutral.
How to do it
- 1Set the bar on your upper traps, unrack it and take two or three steps back.
- 2Place your feet slightly wider than shoulder width with toes turned out a little, breathe in and brace your abs.
- 3Descend by pushing the hips back and bending the knees in line with your toes.
- 4Reach thighs parallel to the floor or lower if your back stays neutral.
- 5Drive through the whole foot to stand up and exhale at the top.
