About
Leg curls are an exercise performed on a machine in which the knee is flexed against resistance. The movement can be done while lying face down, sitting, or standing on one leg. It targets the muscles on the back of the thigh—the long and short heads of the biceps femoris, the semitendinosus, and the semimembranosus. The gastrocnemius (calf muscle) also assists in the movement, as it crosses both the ankle and the knee joints posteriorly.
How to do it
- 1Start with your legs straight or nearly straight, keeping your pelvis and torso pressed firmly against the supports.
- 2In one smooth motion, pull your heels toward your glutes as far as is comfortable for your knees. Do not jerk the weight.
- 3Lower the weight in a controlled manner until your legs are straight or nearly straight, keeping your pelvis and torso stationary.
