About
A rowing machine, or rowing ergometer, is a piece of cardio equipment featuring a sliding seat, footrests, and a handle connected to a flywheel or another type of resistance system. Each stroke combines a leg drive, a slight hinge at the hips, and a pull with the upper body; this sequence is then reversed to return to the starting position. It is a coordinated, full-body movement, rather than a seated pulling action performed using only the back and arms.
How to do it
- 1Push off from the footrests, sliding the seat backward; keep your arms straight as your legs begin to extend.
- 2As your legs near full extension, shift your torso from a slight forward lean to a position just past vertical—leaning back—then bend your elbows and pull the handle toward your lower ribs.
- 3Extend your arms forward, hinge your torso slightly forward at the hips, then bend your knees and slide back to the starting position.
